September
🌕 Celestial Events
🔴 Blood Moon / Lunar Eclipse – 7th September 2025
This total lunar eclipse will cause the Moon to take on a deep reddish hue — a classic Blood Moon.
Great for mindful or symbolic activities like:
  • "Letting go" rituals
  • Journaling prompts around shadow work or emotional release
  • Night walks or moon-gazing with young people: encouraging quiet reflection
  • Creating moon-themed crafts or visual metaphors for transformation
🌠 Equinox – 22nd September 2025
The Autumn Equinox marks the moment of equal day and night, a symbolic time of balance, harvest, and preparation for inward reflection.
Ideas for wellbeing practice:
  • Gratitude journaling: "What am I harvesting this season?"
  • Forest bathing or mindful leaf-collecting walks
  • Outdoor fire circles or reflection circles around themes of change and letting go
🍁 Seasonal Shifts in Nature
🍄 Foraging Season
Blackberries, elderberries, hazelnuts, hawthorn berries, mushrooms and apples are in abundance.
Could be used to:
  • Teach patience and appreciation through seasonal cycles
  • Do joint nature walks or wild cooking sessions
  • Run "harvest gratitude" sessions for grounding children in cycles of change and abundance
🦔 Wildlife Activity
Hedgehogs, bats, and birds are all quite active as they prep for winter.
Bat walks around dusk (like your River Caldew strolls) are perfect right now.
Migration starts for swallows and martins — a great metaphor for movement, transition, and resilience.
🌿 Wellbeing & Mental Health Awareness Dates
🌍 Zero Emissions Day – 21st September
A great hook for forest school or eco-awareness activities.
Could link with conversations around "what we take in and what we give out" – emotionally and environmentally.
🕊️ International Day of Peace – 21st September
An ideal day for practicing or teaching restorative approaches, mindful conflict resolution, or co-regulation.
You could build a small ritual with kids or teams – a stone drop into a bowl of water, for example, to represent releasing conflict or restoring calm.
💛 World Gratitude Day – 21st September
Create a Gratitude Tree using autumn leaves
  • Journal prompts for kids and adults: "What's one moment from this week I want to keep with me?"
  • Use this as a reflective pause point mid-month, particularly near the Equinox.
🔥 Nature-Connected Practices to Embrace This Month
  • Campfire evenings – Using rhythm and relational time to build trust, storytelling, and emotional safety (link to Bruce Perry's 6 R's)
  • Wind-focused mindfulness – Encouraging kids to feel the shift in air as a sensory grounding strategy
  • Barefoot walks (if still mild) – Grounding exercises through direct connection to the earth
  • Seed collecting – Link with long-term thinking and planning (ideal for adolescents exploring identity)
🎨 Creative Wellbeing Ideas
  • Create Autumn Altars – natural items + intentions
  • Harvest Mask-Making – link to your "mask metaphor" work; what mask are we shedding with the leaves?
  • Moon Phase Tracker – encourage young people to track their moods alongside the lunar cycle

Forest bathing was one of our most popular offerings, providing peaceful immersion and promoting wellbeing. Wildflower journaling was also a hit, fostering creativity and appreciation for nature. Due to this overwhelmingly positive feedback, we are excited to expand both nature-inspired programs for the summer months ahead.
